Question: Mining Machine Operator

Could be in an open pit solution mine, or possibly underground in one of Saskatchewan’s many pot ash mines. There are over 5200 Heavy Equipment Operators across the province. Many of them working in resource rich mines across the prairies.
A great entry level job with the potential for employer training and a large salary, this is a very accessible career for job seekers in our province.
Which brings us to our question! What is the single most important soft skill that employers look for in a candidate when hiring for this position? Even though it’s just one, feel free to list as many that come to mind. A $50 gift card is on the line!

Answer: Robotic Welder Operator Education

Yesterday we asked the question about your best guess to what kind of education it would take to be hired in this type of career. Or more specifically Machine Operators in general.
The answer is simple. Some secondary school education is usually required. Employers typically want to see educational proof that you are indeed trainable.
On-the-job training is provided since each one of these positions is so unique.
If you plan to move on to an Inspectors position, it may require experience as an assembler in the same company.

Also more formally known as Machine Operators. In this position duties are operating machinery or equipment to fabricate complete products or parts for use in the assembly of electrical appliances and equipment, and electrical apparatus, such as batteries, fuses and plugs. Inspectors in this unit group inspect and test completed parts and production items.

Answer: In demand soft skills as a Pipefitter

Here is the answer to yesterday’s question we posted. The three most in demand soft skills for this position are:
-Attention to detail
-Team player
-Effective interpersonal skills
Attention to detail is of the utmost importance in a position like this. A step being missed, even if it appears to be small, could cause equipment failure or harm to workers.
Team player is important since almost all types of pipe fitting work is done in close communication with other workers. Using a crane to raise/lower piping, bolt up configurations, proper installations, all require an effective and well communicating team to do the job safely and efficiently.
Effective interpersonal skills. Which is again effective communication with your coworkers and getting along well on a team. In this line of work, it’s needed on a daily basis for nearly every type of work you encounter on the job.

Steamfitters and pipefitters lay out, assemble, fabricate, maintain, troubleshoot and repair piping systems carrying water, steam, chemicals and fuel in heating, cooling, lubricating and other process piping systems. Sprinkler system installers fabricate, install, test, maintain and repair water, foam, carbon dioxide and dry chemical sprinkler systems in buildings for fire protection purposes.


With that in mind, here’s our question: What are the three most in demand soft skills employers are looking for in hiring a Pipefitter?


These aren’t skills that are normally taught in a class or in the actual trades work itself. These are desirable personality traits that help in certain jobs.

Answer: Largest employers of Process Operators in Saskatchewan.

These are the three largest employers who hire many of the provinces Process Operators.
1) Nutrien. Located in 15 countries and currently employing 20,000 employees. Many of them Process Operators for the plants being run in Saskatchewan.
2) Co-op Refinery Complex. The oil refinery on the edge of Regina employees 1100 people during normal operations. Oil and gas in general hires a large percentage of Process Operators due to the nature of the type of work that goes into refining.
3) The Mosaic Company. With multiple pot ash mines through out the province. Also a very large employer of Process Operators through out Saskatchewan.
With so many companies that employee Process Operators right here in the province, it should be no surprise that we have 1800 existing positions through out Saskatchewan.

Let’s talk about being a Process Operator in Saskatchewan.
In a nut shell, Petroleum, gas and chemical process operators monitor and operate petroleum, petrochemical and chemical plants and monitor, adjust and maintain processing units and equipment in these plants. They are employed by petroleum and natural gas processing, pipeline and petrochemical companies and industrial, agricultural and specialty chemical and pharmaceutical companies.
So given this information, who would you guess are Saskatchewan’s largest employers/companies who hire Process Operators?

The answer to last Friday’s question: Mining engineers plan, design, organize and supervise the development of mines, mine facilities, systems and equipment; and prepare and supervise the extraction of metallic or non-metallic minerals and ores from underground or surface mines.
Further details of duties include:
-Surveys and studies of ore, mineral or coal deposits
-Advise on appropriate drilling and blasting methods
-Determine safe and efficient mining of deposits
-Plan and design or select mining equipment
